William Munny (Eastwood) is een ex-premiejager, die nog één keer wordt overgehaald om een klus aan te nemen, om zo zijn oude dag door te kunnen komen. Hij wordt ingehuurd om de man te vermoorden die het gezicht van een hoertje heeft opengesneden. Hij krijgt te maken met de keiharde sheriff Daggett (Hackman), die geen premiejagers in zijn stadje tolereert. Munny komt erachter dat het niet meer zo makkelijk is als vroeger om gewetenloos mensen te vermoorden.
