Sam Flynn, de 27 jaar oude rebelse zoon van Kevin Flynn doet onderzoek naar de verdwijning van zijn vader, ooit bekend als ‘s werelds vooraanstaande gameontwikkelaar. Tijdens zijn zoektocht leidt een vreemd signaal, afkomstig van zijn vader, hem naar Flynns Arcade waar hij in de digitale wereld van Tron wordt getrokken. Dezelfde wereld waar zijn vader al 20 jaar blijkt te leven. Samen met Kevins vertrouweling Quorra komen vader en zoon in een levensgevaarlijk gevecht terecht met een meedogenloze vijand. Zij moeten zien te ontsnappen uit een prachtige visuele cyberwereld met nog nooit eerder uitgevonden voertuigen, wapens en landschappen. Een wereld die niet alleen heel geavanceerd blijkt te zijn, maar ook heel erg gevaarlijk.
