Het verhaal speelt zich af in Xenia, een klein, dodelijk saai stadje in Ohio. De film volgt een aantal randfiguren, onder wie Solomon, een magere 14-jarige met een even verwarde als gewelddadige moeder. Zijn beste vriend, de 19-jarige Tummler, woont bij een holistische vader die zijn gezag allang verloren heeft en nooit over de dood van Tummlers moeder is heen gekomen. De twee vrienden slijten hun dagen met lijm snuiven, voor geld zwerfkatten afmaken en kattenkwaad en ergere streken uithalen. Moreel besef is hen vreemd.
