De film is gebaseerd op de mislukte missie "Operation Red Wings", die op 28 juni 2005 werd uitgevoerd door Navy Seal Team 10. Het doel van het team is om Taliban-leider Ahmad Shah te doden. De missie komt echter al snel in het gedrang als het team nabij het Hindu Kush gebergte in een hinderlaag van de Taliban loopt. Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg) moet alles op alles zetten om deze nachtmerrie te overleven.
