In het voorjaar van 1922 verlaat de schrijver Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) het Midwesten en verhuist naar New York City. Hij jaagt zijn eigen American Dream na en neemt zijn intrek in de buurt van de mysterieuze, altijd feestende miljonair Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), en zijn nicht Daisy (Carey Mulligan) en haar man Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), een adellijke rokkenjager.
