Twintigduizend jaar geleden strekten gletsjers zich uit over de aarde en overal vluchtten de dieren voor de dreigende ijstijd. In deze periode van gevaar loopt er een vreemde horde dieren rond: de vlotte luiaard Sid, de knorrige mammoet Manny, de duivelse sabeltandtijger Diego en de eekhoorn Scrat. Deze buitenbeentjes werken onverwachts samen om een mensenkind te herenigen met zijn familie. Hiervoor moeten ze lavapoelen, verraderlijke ijsgrotten en de nodige hinderlagen trotseren.
