De journaliste Jennifer woont in New York met haar vriend Martin. Haar moeder Nettie vindt op een dag een verhaal dat haar dochter schreef op dertienjarige leeftijd waarin ze een relatie tussen een jong meisje en een volwassen coach genaamd Bill blootlegt. Nettie beseft dat het verhaal waargebeurd moet zijn en confronteert haar dochter hiermee. Jennifer herinnert zich de details uit het verhaal echter anders. Ze gaat op zoek naar alle betrokkenen uit het verhaal, maar wanneer de dertienjarige Jenny haar pad kruist, komt de schokkende waarheid naar boven.
