Een meisje dat ongelukkig is in de liefde ontmoet bij toeval de man van haar dromen. Het duurt niet lang voordat het koppel verloofd is en hun bruiloft aan het plannen is op het landgoed van de familie van de bruid: Martha's Vineyard. De twee families kunnen echter niet zo goed met elkaar omgaan als het liefhebbende paar gehoopt had. De traditionele, passief-agressieve moeder van de bruidegom is verontwaardigd dat ze nu pas aan de aankomende bruid wordt voorgesteld en er ontstaat onmiddellijk wrijving tussen de twee moeders. De belemmeringen tussen de twee families voorspellen niet veel goeds voor de bruid en bruidegom, wanneer de grote dag snel nadert.
