De gebeurtenissen spelen zich af tijdens de Ierse hongersnood in 1847. Martin Feeney vecht voor het Britse leger in Afghanistan, maar deserteert en keert terug naar Ierland om zich te herenigen met zijn gezin. Ondanks de gruwelen van de oorlog schrikt hij voornamelijk van wat er van zijn land geworden is sinds het begin van de voedselschaarste. Ook op het bijna barbaars gedrag van zijn gezin en omgeving had hij niet gerekend. Uit wanhoop zweert Martin bloedwraak tegen de sociale en politieke toestand in zijn land, waarop de Britten de soldaat Hannah inhuren om aan Martins plan een halte toe te roepen.
